The Sandinsta Project On the new version of "One More Time/One More Dub," ex-Voidoid Ivan Julian tilts galaxies of guitar through the rippling immersions of Iranian-American chanteuse Haale, as his bass drives notes almost deeper than feeling, though not without constant harassment from onetime Lounge Lizard Dougie Bowne's drums. Don Allred, The Village Voice

Fronted by Richard Hell & the Voidoids guitarist Ivan Julian and featuring Feelies drummer Vinny Denunzio, The Outsets EP on Plexus was produced by Garland Jeffreys with Bob Clearmountain engineering and Bob Ludwig mastering -- a pretty impressive crew on board for the four songs here. And the sound is great. "Dancin' in the Dark" is a far cry from Bruce Springsteen's 1984 hit of the same name and Peter Wolf's "Light's Out." Wolf had changed his title to "Light's Out" from "Dancing in the Dark," and that this hip EP emerged the year before those two stars got the idea to have hits with the same title and theme -- well, coincidences abound in the music biz. Producer Jeffreys certainly knows what is hip, and these four songs rock with a beat that is mesmerizing and irresistable. It's hard to fathom that Julian appears on Bob Pfeifer's After Words, as this unique and exciting disc is the antithesis of what that was all about. Denunzio's drums provide a solid groove for Julian's exotic guitar to glide over on "Iceman." It's short and sweet, four songs that hit you quick and leave just as quickly, but The Outsets is Grade A material, Shriekback meeting Peter Noone's new wave band the Tremblers. Solid pop expanding and collapsing with smart guitars playing against the bass. Super. Joe Viglione, All Music Guide

"Backed by a hard-nosed quartet, (Matthew) Sweet set the tone right off the top with a titanic version of "Come To California," from his recent album Blue Sky On Mars. Sweet rode the song's monster riff as talented co-guitarist Ivan Julian - a player of explosive power and invention - poured white-hot fills into every nook and cranny. "Divine Intervention," on record a lilting, meandering metaphysical lament, onstage became a blistering jam. Even the tender "Winona" was transformed from a sweet, steel guitar spangled country ballad into a Crazy Horse-style showcase for Sweet's and Julien's axe-work. His signature song, "Girlfriend," rocks mightily on record, but fuelled by drummer Ric Menck's heroic work, the song was served up at almost unrecognizable Green Day tempo. Julian provided stellar 12-string embellishments on "Time Capsule," which Sweet jokingly remarked had recently been added to the Muzak corporation's elevator music arsenal." Paul Cantin - Ottawa Sun

"(Matthew) Sweet was in prime form and seemed to be having a great time. Ric Menck's drums were lit with an eerie glow, illuminating the words Blue Sky On Mars, the title of Sweet's upcoming album, on them. What took the show beyond being a great show to a "you-missed-it?!" show was Ivan Julian, Sweet's lead guitarist. There are a lot of bands and a lot more guitarists, but there is only one Ivan Julian. He was in top form, a leopard shirt clinging to his thin frame, dancing around the stage like his leg was connected to a live wire. Julian's leads raged from a slow swagger to a blistery burn as his long fingers danced up and down the neck of his battered off-white Stratocaster. For a few songs, Julian even played lead guitar on a 12-string guitar, which is, at best, very uncommon. Usually a 12-string is relegated to rhythm guitar, but Julian had it singing like a choir boy. The Audreys, "The Audreys EP" (www.theaudreys.net) ***{ Staying on the minimalist art-rock/garage-punk tip, the Audreys are an ambitious trio of rockers who have released a strong eight-song disc produced by one of their heroes, Ivan Julian, best known as a member of Richard Hell and the Voidoids. Songs such as "Hardwired" and "Shut Down (All of the Time)" prove that the Strokes aren't the only band to have mastered a unique and energizing take on that classic mix of Velvet Underground drone, Stooges attitude and Feelies kineticism. This is definitely a band to watch

The Audreys Lp (CD) (Music Review) The Audreys are a (three piece) band from Chicago. The music is a tight fisted pop glove; the songs are not three chord but are pummeled along by a heavy back beat and a swirling guitar. Leads back the vocals sung in a speak sing monotone with inflection. Comparisons are a short cut to thinking, so I won't list the cool bands the Audreys remind me of as I nod my head and tap my foot. This produced by Ivan Julian formally of the Voidoids and that's all you need to know. Fucking great, I like this CD and I got it in the car.
